Confirmed Shinkansen Reservations
Hakata -> Kyoto:
- Travel date: Sunday, 2026-06-28.
- From: Hakata.
- To: Kyoto.
- Travelers: 4.
- Train: NOZOMI 20, Series N700 with 16 cars.
- Time: 10:15 AM -> 12:59 PM.
- Seats: Car 15, seats 1A/1B/1C/1D.
- Seat type: ordinary car with oversized baggage area.
- Planning logic: Dazaifu Airbnb checkout is before 10:00 AM, so the morning needs an early checkout, Dazaifu -> Hakata transfer, bento/snacks, bathrooms, and platform navigation before a 10:15 AM train.
Kyoto -> Tokyo:
- Travel date: Wednesday, 2026-07-01.
- From: Kyoto.
- To: Tokyo.
- Travelers: 4.
- Train: NOZOMI 248, Series N700 with 16 cars.

- Seats: Car 16, seats 1A/1B/1C/1D.
- Seat type: ordinary car with oversized baggage area.

Luggage and boarding notes:
- Both booked family Shinkansen legs use ordinary seats with oversized baggage area.
- Measure each checked bag before travel anyway: length + width + height, including wheels and handles.
- 160 cm or less: no oversized-baggage reservation required.
- More than 160 cm and up to 250 cm: reserve seats with oversized baggage area in Smart EX.
- More than 250 cm: cannot be brought onto the relevant Shinkansen.
- The booked oversized-baggage-area seats should cover the family Shinkansen legs, but still keep bag size rules in mind for any later Shinkansen changes.
- If all bags are under 160 cm but still heavy/annoying, luggage-area seats or forwarding can still be chosen for comfort on future train bookings.
- Keep passports, medication, chargers, one-night clothes, and valuables with the family even if forwarding any bag.
Airport And Flight Anchors

- Depart PUS at 6:00 PM.
- Arrive FUK at 7:00 PM.
- Carry-on and first checked bag included per booking PDF.
- Confirmation: see bookings and reservations.
- Family departure: Tokyo area, Friday 2026-07-03 at about 4:35 PM; airport still needs confirmation.
- Quinn arrival for the July travel window: Narita (NRT), Saturday 2026-07-04 at 3:10 PM.
- My departure after the July travel window: Narita (NRT), Saturday 2026-07-11 at 6:00 PM.
- Alaska Airlines 824 NRT -> SEA.
- Alaska Airlines 700 SEA -> PHX.
- Use bookings and reservations for confirmation details.
- Quinn departure after the July travel window: Narita (NRT) -> Hong Kong, Saturday 2026-07-11; exact time and airline TBD.
July Transportation Frame
- July 3 is a split day: family airport departure plus my July lodging/luggage reset.
- July 4 should protect Quinn’s Narita arrival variance before any evening plan.
- July 4-6 target base is east Tokyo, with Asakusa/Kuramae/Ueno/Nippori/Oshiage as the main Airbnb search areas.
- July 6-8 target base is Nikko, with Tobu-Nikko/JR Nikko, Shinkyo/World Heritage area, or a value onsen area as the main search areas.
- July 8-10 target base returns to east Tokyo.
- July 10 should move Quinn and me to the Narita area by Friday night, ideally to an Airbnb.
- July 11 should be planned backward from a comfortable Narita airport arrival buffer.
- If the July route leaves Tokyo, confirm the return-to-Narita path before committing late-week lodging.
Nikko Transit Frame
- Default Tokyo base should favor easy access to Tobu Asakusa if doing Nikko.
- Default Nikko route: Tobu Asakusa -> Tobu-Nikko, then local buses or walking depending on lodging and POIs.
- July 6 should protect the Tokyo -> Nikko transfer, bag drop/check-in, and World Heritage / Kanmangafuchi area.
- July 7 should protect bus access to Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, Ryuzu Falls, Senjogahara, or an onsen area.
- July 8 should protect the Nikko -> east Tokyo return and an easy city evening.
- Check Tobu pass economics once Nikko lodging and bus ambitions are known.
Pre-Japan Context
- Phoenix departure: Sunday, 2026-06-21 around 6:00 AM.
- Seoul arrival: Monday, 2026-06-22 around 3:20 PM.
- Seoul -> Busan by train before the Busan -> Fukuoka flight.
Local Transit Preferences
- Subway complexity is acceptable.
- Local buses are acceptable.
- Balance scenery and convenience.
- Do not ultra-optimize transit efficiency at the expense of pacing.
- Use Google Maps for live city routing and walking end-caps, but sanity-check important transfer days with NAVITIME or Jorudan.
- Use NAVITIME when comparing Shinkansen, buses, air, taxi, pass filters, walking burden, first/last trains, and fewest-transfer options.
- Use Jorudan as a second opinion for fares and schedules; remember some detailed features are paid and disruption handling is not guaranteed.
IC Card Plan
- iPhone users should try adding Suica, PASMO, ICOCA, or TOICA to Apple Wallet before departure.
- Android users with overseas phones should plan for a physical IC card unless the exact device is confirmed compatible.
- Since the first Japan arrival is Fukuoka rather than Tokyo, do not rely on buying a physical Welcome Suica on arrival; buy a local interoperable card such as nimoca, SUGOCA, or Hayakaken if mobile IC is not ready.
- Keep cash as the fallback for routes, buses, lockers, or small shops where IC is not accepted.
- As of 2026-06-04, official JR East/PASMO guidance says non-personalized Suica/PASMO sales resumed in 2025 and PASMO PASSPORT is discontinued. Older card-shortage guides should not steer the trip plan.
- Do not try to solve Fukuoka local transit with a Tokyo airport Welcome Suica dependency.
Fukuoka Local Plan
- Fukuoka lodging is Dazaifu, so plan arrival and departure around Dazaifu access rather than Tenjin/Hakata convenience.
- Airport -> Dazaifu on 2026-06-26 should use the simplest live route after the 7:00 PM arrival; taxi support is acceptable if bags, rain, or timing make transit annoying.
- Dazaifu -> Hakata on 2026-06-28 needs a conservative buffer before the Kyoto Shinkansen.
- A small Tenjin, Hakata, or Nakasu add-on is feasible during the Dazaifu stay, but it should remain optional and should include a return-to-Dazaifu plan before leaving.
Luggage
- Group has medium-large checked bags plus carry-ons.
- Prioritize simple luggage logistics on transition days.
- Consider luggage forwarding only if it materially reduces friction.
- Measure all checked bags before Shinkansen booking.
- If any bag is over 160 cm and up to 250 cm total dimensions, reserve a Shinkansen seat with oversized baggage area.
- Dazaifu Airbnb -> Kyoto Airbnb is probably better handled with luggage seats and taxi support than forwarding unless the Kyoto host confirms receiving logistics.
- Kyoto Airbnb -> Tokyo hotel is the better forwarding candidate if The Tokyo EDITION confirms it can receive bags.
- Yamato says pickup/delivery is not available for Airbnb-like lodging without reception staff, so do not assume Dazaifu or Kyoto Airbnb forwarding works door-to-door.
- Relevant hands-free counters to check close to travel include Fukuoka Airport International Airline Center, Hakata Station counters, Kyoto Station, Sagawa Hakata Deitos, Sagawa Fukuoka Airport, Sagawa Kyoto Station Hachijo Exit, and Sagawa Gion.
- Same-day delivery depends on counter, cutoff time, size, destination area, weather, traffic, and parcel volume. It is a convenience option, not a same-day guarantee.
Hitachi Seaside Park Transit
- Long day trip from Tokyo.
- Snapshot estimate: about 2-2.5 hours each way.
- Early departure recommended.
Gotchas
- Verify live schedules, platform transfers, airport-transfer buffers, and service interruptions before travel.
- Re-check July 3 family airport timing once hotel and airport are confirmed.
- Re-check July 4 Quinn arrival terminal and meeting plan once flight details are available.
- Re-check July 11 Alaska schedule, terminal, check-in timing, baggage rules, and airport transfer before departure.
- Add Quinn’s July 11 Narita -> Hong Kong flight details once available and coordinate airport timing around both departures.
- Use bookings and reservations for confirmation numbers rather than duplicating them across day pages.
- The Shinkansen booking-window notes are now historical; use the confirmed Smart EX reservations and live platform information for day-of decisions.
- Do not assume an IC card can replace reserved Shinkansen tickets.
- Do not transcribe QR ticket token strings into ordinary notes; use the filed Smart EX screenshots when boarding details are needed.
- Do not forward anything needed for the first Tokyo night unless The Tokyo EDITION confirms receipt and the carrier confirms timing.
