2026-07-06 Tokyo to Nikko

Purpose

Move from east Tokyo to Nikko and use the first Nikko day for the shrine/river side of town.

When to Use

Use this page for the July 6 lodging move, Tobu train planning, first Nikko check-in, and World Heritage/Kanmangafuchi routing.

Theme

Nikko arrival, shrines, and river atmosphere.

Plan

Morning:

  • Check out from the east Tokyo Airbnb.
  • Travel from Tobu Asakusa to Tobu-Nikko if the east Tokyo base makes that practical.
  • Keep luggage simple; this route assumes backpack-level packing, not suitcase logistics.

Midday:

  • Arrive Nikko and store bags if check-in is not available.
  • Start with the Shinkyo / World Heritage area if weather is decent.

Afternoon:

  • Toshogu / Rinno-ji / Futarasan area as the structured anchor.
  • Kanmangafuchi Abyss if there is energy and weather allows.
  • Check in and keep the evening low-friction.

Options

  • Full shrine cluster first, then Kanmangafuchi.
  • Kanmangafuchi first if arriving early and wanting the quieter river walk before shrine crowds.
  • If arrival is late or rain is heavy, make Shinkyo plus a shorter shrine visit the day.

Food Notes

  • Do not assume late-night food abundance in Nikko.
  • If lodging is away from town, confirm dinner options or whether dinner is included.

Transit Notes

  • Tobu Asakusa -> Tobu-Nikko is the default route to verify.
  • Check whether a Tobu Nikko pass makes sense based on bus usage to Lake Chuzenji / Yumoto.
  • Choose Nikko lodging based on bus/train practicality, not just room price.

Official Info

Gotchas

  • Do not book a Nikko stay that makes bus access to the lake/falls day annoying unless the lodging itself is the point.
  • If the day starts late, do not force every shrine; protect July 7 for the bigger nature day.
