2026-06-29 Arashiyama Nature Day
Purpose
Plan the Kyoto forest, temple, bamboo, and river day around Arashiyama.
When to Use
Use this page for Monday Arashiyama timing, activity order, and the optional Osaka evening decision.
Theme
Forest-temple-river Kyoto.
Why It Fits
This day supports:
- Bamboo and forest atmosphere.
- Temple gardens.
- River walking.
- Scenic Kyoto without making the day a museum/checklist grind.
- Easy recovery at CHOAN-RIN afterward.
Route From CHOAN-RIN
Primary route:
- Use the JR Sagano Line toward Saga-Arashiyama if it is convenient from the lodging.
- Expect Saga-Arashiyama Station to be the easiest rail target for the bamboo grove and Tenryu-ji.
- Verify the exact nearest station and walking route from CHOAN-RIN the night before.
Taxi-support option:
- Use a short taxi to the best JR/Sagano Line station if heat, rain, or morning fatigue makes the first local transfer annoying.
- This is a good place to spend a little money to protect the scenic day.
Full Itinerary
Early morning:
- Leave CHOAN-RIN around 7:00-7:30 AM if the group is moving well.
- Go directly to Arashiyama before the worst crowd pressure.
- Start with the bamboo grove and nearby Nonomiya Shrine atmosphere before shops and tour groups fully wake up.
Late morning:
- Tenryu-ji garden and buildings.
- Use Tenryu-ji as the structured anchor because the official hours are 8:30 AM-5:00 PM, with last admission at 4:50 PM.
- Exit toward the bamboo/Okochi Sanso side if the flow is convenient.
Midday:
- Okochi Sanso Garden if the group wants a quieter garden/view experience.
- Snack/lunch break in Arashiyama.
- Do not chase a reservation-only lunch; keep food flexible and non-seafood-friendly.
Afternoon
Flexible:
- Riverside wandering.
- Shops and snacks.
- Cafe break.
- Togetsukyo Bridge area if the group still wants classic Arashiyama scenery.
Optional:
- Iwatayama Monkey Park only if weather, energy, and uphill walking comfort are all good.
Fallbacks
Late start:
- Skip the bamboo-grove perfectionism.
- Make Tenryu-ji and river wandering the anchors.
- Add Okochi Sanso only if the group still has energy.
Heat or heavy humidity:
- Bamboo grove early.
- Tenryu-ji garden.
- Long lunch/cafe break.
- Skip Monkey Park and any steep add-ons.
Rain:
- Tenryu-ji and covered food/shop breaks.
- Short bamboo grove walk if rain is light.
- Return to CHOAN-RIN earlier and use the open-air bath/home recovery.
Crowds:
- Move away from the central bamboo/Togetsukyo pinch points.
- Favor Okochi Sanso, riverside edges, and slower wandering over forcing photos.

Evening Options
Option A:
- Stay in Kyoto for relaxed dinner.
- Return to CHOAN-RIN, clean up, and keep the evening local.
Option B:
- Mini Osaka night visit.
- Focus on Dotonbori, arcades, street food, and nightlife atmosphere.
- Return to Kyoto same night.
- Only do this if the whole group still has energy after Arashiyama.
Gotchas
- Do not force Osaka if Arashiyama plus heat/humidity uses the day’s energy.
- Crowds are highly timing-sensitive here.
- Okochi Sanso is a better fit than Monkey Park if the family wants calm scenery over uphill exertion.
- Protect June 30 energy; Kurama/Kibune is the bigger nature day.
