Holidays And Seasons
Purpose
Japan holiday, festival, and seasonal context for planning and interpretation.
When to Use
Use this page for Golden Week, New Year, cherry blossoms, autumn leaves, festivals, closures, and seasonal timing.
Seasonal Notes
- New Year: expect closures, family travel, shrine visits, and reduced business hours around late December and early January. Verify restaurants and attractions directly.
- Cherry blossom season: generally late March to April for many central-Honshu destinations, earlier in warmer areas and later in northern or higher-elevation areas. Forecasts and bloom status are live checks, not reusable facts.
- Golden Week: late April to early May brings domestic travel pressure, higher prices, and reservation scarcity.
- Rainy season: roughly early summer for much of Japan, with regional variation. Keep indoor swaps and waterproof plans.
- Summer: heat, humidity, fireworks, festivals, mountain access, beaches, and typhoon risk all matter. Build hydration and rest into the plan.
- Obon/summer holidays: domestic travel and family events can affect transport and lodging; check exact dates for the year.
- Autumn foliage: timing varies by region, elevation, and weather. Treat forecasts like cherry blossoms: useful close to travel, not stable.
- Winter: good for illuminations, hot springs, snow regions, and clear air in some areas; plan carefully for snow country and shorter daylight.
- Current-year checks: use JMA for weather and warnings, JNTO/Japan Travel for seasonal travel pages, local tourism boards for festivals, and official venue pages for closures or special openings.
Gotchas
- Dates, bloom forecasts, closures, and event schedules are drift-sensitive and need current verification.
- Seasonal “best time” advice can conflict with crowd tolerance, budget, family constraints, and weather risk.
